I joined this organization in 2013 when I was having a difficult time in my life. I was brand new to kayaking and not sure what to expect, but it was one of the best decisions I have made. I felt instantly accepted by everyone in the group. Members shared their knowledge and experience, and most importantly, friendship. Everyone is wiling to lend equipment and other gear to those without. The events are well planned with opportunities to kayak, camp and volunteer at community events. I have also experienced snow skiing, festivals, target practice, and other fun activities with members from the group. Sami, the group leader, dedicates an incredible amount of his time and effort to organize paddles and events. He is truly passionate about kayaking, the environment, and helping the community. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, this group is for you!

Joined this group about 4-5 years ago. Best decision ever. Fairly new to kayaking but was welcomed with open arms, unlimited support, and friendship. Everyone is wiling to lend yaks and other gear to those without as well as share their knowledge and experience. The events are extremely well organized and there are many opportunities to volunteer at community events. Sami dedicates an amazing amount of time scheduling and organizing paddles as well as the community events. As a true testament to our respect for him..when the request for volunteers is extended.... the spots fill up almost immediately. We are all friends on and off of the water. Confused by the couple bad reviews.....had to be personal or miscommunication because they were completely not an accurate depiction of the river rats.

This is my second season participating with the AKA and the River Rats and it's been a totally positive experience. I have always felt welcome, included and made to feel as an active participant in the group. I am a newbie white water kayaker and a slow learner but this last week my river mates actively gave me positive tips and feedback on improving my technique and learning the sport. Sometimes the rapids on the river can be scary but I always feel safe knowing the other participants actively have my back and are looking out for my safety. They aren't obligated to they just are. I have also been impressed with the number of community volunteer events sponsored and supported by AKA. Giving back to the public and community. I felt guilty last year for not making myself available for such great events because of other commitments. I did attend a river cleanup last fall that was really life changing for me in that it gave me a new found sense of appreciation and commitment to protecting our environment. I'm proud to be affiliated with this group and it's members.

I call the Ohio River Rats my family. This is a wonderful group of people who love to paddle and paddle safely. The group is composed of many experienced levels and almost every weekend there is a paddling event. We all look out for one another when paddling and no one is left behind. There is always someone ready to do a rescue in case of swimmers. I also love that there are paddling and camping events. I love this group and I will always call them my family.

I have had the pleasure of volunteering with this great group of people on several occasions. These occasions have included introducing kayaking to adults and kids at an Arts Festival, a Pride Weekend, a Boy Scout Event and a Metro Parks and YMCA event for special needs kids. I’ve also participated with them in river clean ups and as a safety boater at triathlons. There is a local meetup group affiliated with the AKA called The Ohio River Rats. As much as the AKA is into volunteering and education, the River Rats are into outings; mostly class I and II rivers but occasionally class III and III+. They also occasionally paddle lakes to enjoy sunsets and meteor showers. GREAT people. As I am getting older, I’m having trouble getting out of my yak and carrying it up hills. There are always, always several people willing to help me. Like I said GREAT PEOPLE and GREAT GROUP.
