Expert Summary

Detailed Insights

Mid-County Family YMCA presents a mixed bag. It's valued by some for its less crowded, beginner-friendly atmosphere, updated gym equipment, and facilities like a brand new family locker room, pool with lanes/deep end, hot tub, and sauna. It caters to those who appreciate a comfortable, 'old-school' gym feel. However, severe and persistent issues with facility cleanliness, unhelpful/rude front desk staff, and inconsistent adherence to publicized operating hours significantly detract from the overall experience for many members.

Key Highlights

  • Offers a less crowded workout environment where 'no one is intimidating,' making it 'very normal person/beginner friendly' in the weight room and classes.
  • Features a brand new family locker room, indicating suitability for families.
  • The pool includes lanes, a deep end, a large hot tub, and a sauna.
  • Ladies locker room (formerly girls locker room) has a dressing area and a steam room.
  • Weight and equipment rooms are described as having 'pretty new equipment' and are 'neat' (when clean).
  • Facilities like the pool and gym/track, while having an 'old-school feel,' are 'nicely maintained' (structure, not cleanliness).
  • Positive mention of a 'synchronized swimming instructor' being 'the nicest person I've ever met,' suggesting quality in specific programs.
  • Updated showers (new and well-equipped) in some areas.
  • Availability of specific machines like seated elliptical, t5 trainer, and Life machines for arm workouts.
  • Good parking, including handicapped parking spots.

Standout Features

  • Brand new family locker room.
  • Pool area with multiple lanes, a deep end, large hot tub, and sauna.
  • Updated gym equipment that is 'pretty new' and 'neat'.
  • Specific updated showers with everything needed.
  • Synchronized swimming instruction with a highly-rated instructor.
  • Spacious and comfortable environment, with an 'old-school feel' appreciated by some.
  • Great and accessible parking, including handicapped spots.

Perfect For

While the business is listed as 'Summer Camps,' these reviews primarily focus on the general YMCA facility. Specific details about camp programs or age-appropriate activities are not available from these reviews.
The presence of a 'brand new family locker room' and a 'synchronized swimming instructor' suggests the facility is equipped to accommodate families with children using the pool or participating in aquatic programs, but specific age ranges for these are not detailed.

Ideal For

Adults seeking a less crowded gym environment for general workouts (weights, classes) that feels welcoming to beginners.
Individuals who appreciate well-maintained (structurally) 'old-school' gym and pool facilities.
Families needing a convenient 'family locker room' for changing.
Those interested in aquatic activities, particularly synchronized swimming, given the positive feedback on the instructor.
Members prioritizing accessible and ample parking.

💡Pro Tips from Reviews

  • **Verify operating hours:** Do not rely solely on website hours; call ahead or expect early closing, especially on weekdays (potentially 15 minutes before 9pm) and weekends (4pm).
  • **Bring your own cleaning supplies:** Be prepared to wipe down machines yourself, as cleanliness is a major reported issue.
  • **Be prepared for noise:** If you prefer quiet workouts, be aware that loud music/videos played by other members without headphones is not regulated by staff.
  • **Consider other branches for administrative issues:** If you anticipate needing assistance with your membership account or problem-solving, be prepared that the front desk here may be unhelpful, and you might need to visit a different YMCA branch.
  • **Focus on specific classes/instructors:** If considering the synchronized swimming program, the instructor is highly praised.

Things to Consider

  • Severe and widespread cleanliness issues reported, described as 'disgraceful,' 'disgustingly dirty everywhere,' 'nasty shit,' with members threatening to call the health department.
  • Front desk staff are frequently described as 'unhelpful and rude,' 'DO NOT CARE about members,' and 'do not solve problems,' sometimes requiring members to visit other branches for account issues.
  • Inconsistent operating hours: Publicized hours on the website do not match actual closing times (e.g., closes at 4pm weekends, 9pm weekdays, with staff sometimes forcing exit by 8:45pm, 15 minutes early).
  • Lack of an enforceable policy regarding members playing loud music or videos on phones without headphones, leading to disruptive environments and staff refusing to intervene.
  • Gymnasium areas can be cluttered with 'stuff lining the entire perimeter of the basketball courts' and a single heavy bag 'chained up in the corner with the dust broom.'

Price & Value

Pricing details are not mentioned in the reviews. The value proposition is negatively impacted by severe cleanliness issues, unhelpful staff, and inconsistent hours, despite some positive aspects of the facilities and less crowded environment.

Accessibility & Special Needs

  • Handicapped parking is available.
  • No other specific accessibility accommodations for programs or facilities are mentioned in the reviews.

🚗Parking Info

  • Great parking available, including dedicated handicapped parking spots.

👥Crowd Levels

  • Generally described as 'not too crowded,' offering a more comfortable workout experience than busier gyms.

🛡️Safety Features

  • Significant cleanliness issues reported, including 'nasty shit' and threats to call the health department, which pose potential health and safety risks.
  • Lack of staff intervention for disruptive member behavior (loud music) could lead to an uncomfortable or confrontational environment.
  • No specific positive safety features (e.g., security, emergency protocols) are mentioned in the reviews.

When to Avoid

  • If cleanliness and hygiene are a top priority, as severe issues have been consistently reported.
  • If strict adherence to publicized operating hours is crucial for your schedule.
  • If you expect front desk staff to be consistently helpful, friendly, or effective at solving problems.
  • If you require a quiet workout environment free from other members' loud personal music or videos.
  • If you depend on staff to enforce facility rules regarding member conduct (e.g., music).

Why does this YMCA Make its own hours , closes at 4pm on weekends , closes at 9pm on weekdays ? Every other Y is open till 10pm and to top it off, the staff believes 9pm means 8:45pm everyone needs to be out of “their” facility !!! News flash buddy without members there is no ymca !!! This place needs an overhaul asap !!! No one cleans !!! This place is disgraceful. Things are getting worse and worse. The front office has been informed & they just ignore it, if I come here one more time & see all the nasty shit, I’ve been seeing the past year !! I am going to just call the health department my damn self !!! Fair Warning to the staff.

I really enjoy my workouts here. It's not too crowded and no one is intimidating (whether they intend to be or not) in the weight room or classes. It's very normal person/ beginner friendly. There's a brand new family locker room. The pool has lanes, a deep end, and a large hot tub & a sauna. Ladies locker room (formerly the girls locker room) has a dressing area and a steam room. In general a comfortable place to be. The weight & equipment rooms are pretty new equipment and neat. Some of my friends won't like the old-school feel of the pool and gym / track but I appreciate the space & it is very nicely maintained. The synchronized swimming instructor is the nicest person I've ever met. Across all YMCA's I wish group classes had a secondary instructor to assist with form. The all-levels classes have so many people trying to do advanced form before they've developed the support for it. - I find this distracting & feel for the instructors who really want the clients to listen to their bodies more. All movement is progress, & as long as no one is hurt that's just the difference between a studio and a Y class.

Gem, unpolished but perfect for me. The shower was updated and new with everything I needed. The seated elliptical and t5 trainer was very well situated in the gym. The life machines were perfect for my arm workout. Everyone seems satisfied and even happy here. Great parking and handicapped parking. Will Go there again.

This Y has publicized hours on the website and supposedly different actual hours posted somewhere in the Y which are very hard to see. Regardless, if they are going to post hours on the site, they need to abide by them and stay open as long as they say. I have gotten kicked out 15 minutes early a few times now, which is more than annoying. It cost me time/money to drive there that I might not have taken if I knew they were going to shortchange us on hours. Further, they need a firm, enforceable policy about members playing music or videos on their phones aloud without headphones on. I come to the gym, as I am sure others do, to get in my own zone and don’t appreciate being forced to listen to others’ music or whatever else they might listen to. Recently when biking near the upper track, I encountered a runner who was blaring her music while running around the track for 30 minutes or more. I asked her to turn it down or put on headphones a few times, and she refused each time (said something to the effect of “you’re at the gym; suck it up”). I phoned down and asked the woman at the front desk to intervene; she said she was too busy. I called again, and she said the Y had no rule about music playing and so, effectively, people could play their music out in the open, anywhere, and as loud as they want. Really?? For a place thay is supposed to foster inclusivity, the rules are not consistent or altogether considerate of others.

I cancelled my membership for this to be my home branch. Still a ymca member, but went to the South City YMcA instead and O-M-G it is a night and day difference. The people at front desk here DO NOT CARE about members. They are so unhelpful and rude, it’s crazy. They do not solve problems, I had to go to an entirely new branch for them to get my account straightened out. Been going to this gym for years now.. I only use it for the Jacob’s ladder and previously racquetball courts and the heavy bag in the gymnasium. I dread coming to this ymca. Nobody wipes off the machines and it’s disgustingly dirty everywhere-I’m not sure if they ever clean this gym.. in the gymnasium they have stuff lining the entire perimeter of the basketball courts..the one single heavy bag they have is chained up in the corner with the dust broom. it not only feels as though they don’t take things seriously and do nothing, but also don’t listen or frankly care about my experience with their members. It also LOOKS and feels so gross and dirty. I highly suggest you consider NOT this branch, but another YMCA branch in the area. You will have a friendlier, cleaner experience.
