Detailed Insights

Piedras Marcadas Canyon offers an accessible outdoor experience focused on discovering ancient petroglyphs amidst desert wildlife. Its easy, mostly flat trails make it suitable for families, especially those who enjoy a self-guided exploration and bringing their canine companions.

Key Highlights

  • Easy trails suitable for walking and light hiking with no significant elevations.
  • Abundance of ancient petroglyphs visible directly from the trails.
  • Opportunities to spot desert wildlife such as coyotes, rabbits, squirrels, and lizards.
  • Dog-friendly environment where pets are welcome on the trails.
  • Multiple trail options, including a shorter path with a high concentration of petroglyphs and connections for moderate, longer hikes (1-1.5 hours).

Standout Features

  • Unique historical and cultural attraction with accessible petroglyphs.
  • Opportunities for wildlife observation.
  • Flexibility in trail length and difficulty, from short, high-concentration routes to moderate, longer loops.
  • Permits dogs on the trails.
  • Free parking in a seemingly safe, small lot.

Perfect For

School-aged children (6-12+): Ideal for engaging in a 'treasure hunt' to find petroglyphs and observe wildlife. The 1-1.5 hour duration is manageable.
Younger children (3-5): Feasible due to easy trails and no significant elevation, but parents should be prepared for sandy/rocky sections and the need for constant engagement to keep them interested in searching for petroglyphs. The lack of facilities and shade is a major consideration.
Teens: Can enjoy the cultural aspect and the option to connect trails for a more moderate hike, especially if they enjoy photography or active exploration.

Ideal For

Families interested in an engaging, self-guided historical and nature walk.
Dog owners looking for a pet-friendly hiking spot.
Those seeking an easy to moderate outdoor activity near Albuquerque.
Families who enjoy 'discovery' and actively searching for points of interest.
A relatively quick (1-1.5 hour) outdoor excursion.

Loved it. Trail is easy and you're not allowed to venture off of it for any reason. For the most part the petroglyphs are not pointed out for you so you have to look for them the whole time you're walking. I wish they would have kept the trail along the rocks the whole way. Recommend having at least 2 people so you can find more of the rock art.

I've been hiking/ walking here for decades. Sad to see all the fencing and restrictions now, but it's still a beautiful place to visit. There are still many petroglyphs to see from the trails. You can frequently see coyotes, rabbits, squirrels, and lizards etc. Take the shortest trail to see the highest concentration of petroglyphs. It's fairy easy, but parts are very sandy. I often like taking the walk that starts to the right, going up on top first. There are no petroglyphs up there, but anywhere youre near the black rock keep your eyes open, you might be surprised at what you find. There are still a few different ways to connect the trails to get a good moderate hike in. In all my years I have never had any issues leaving my car in the small parking lot. It's located right behind two businesses and by some homes. Biggest drawback is there are no restrooms at this site. At this time of year it's not too busy.

I took my dogs walking here I liked it and my dogs did as well there are rocky parts of the path so if you have knee problems I would think twice about walking here. Some of the drawings were hard to see the trail is pretty much all fenced off so you can't go off the path. It takes about an hour maybe an hour and a half to complete.

Nice hike area just outside of ABQ. It is par of Petroglyph National Monument. No facilities and no shade throughout the hike. Easy hike without any significant elevations.
