💡Pro Tips from Reviews
- →For adult respite care, plan well in advance (6+ months) due to the extensive approval process, paperwork, and meetings.
- →Be prepared to proactively and repeatedly follow up with administration via email for confirmations, drop-off times, and readiness for adult respite care services.
- →Parents of special needs children should weigh the serious allegations regarding management's attitude towards individuals with disabilities against the reported good treatment of clients.
Things to Consider
- ⚠The application and approval process for adult respite care is extremely lengthy (reported >6 months) and burdensome, requiring extensive paperwork and multiple mandatory meetings (3 cited).
- ⚠Significant communication issues for adult respite care, requiring parents to repeatedly initiate contact (emails) for confirmations, readiness, and drop-off times, even on the day of arrival.
- ⚠Allegations of management making fun of individuals with disabilities behind their backs, raising serious ethical questions for parents of special needs children.
- ⚠Concerns about management putting on a 'show' for visitors (e.g., turning up music for clients to dance when 'important people' are present), suggesting a curated experience over genuine day-to-day engagement.
- ⚠Staff (counselors) report poor treatment by management, unfulfilled promises of bonuses/good food, and theft of personal belongings without supervisory assistance (indirectly impacting client care via staff morale and turnover).

8 months agoI applied for my adult autistic son to go to the weekend adult respite care offered year round more than 6 months ago. So far my experience with getting him there for the first day has been mixed. The paperwork and meetings necessary to just get him approved is an enormous task to begin with. Then when I finally got approved and went to the 3 meetings required, I waited for a confirmation from them. I had to write to them first to confirm that everything was ready to go. I gave them the first day I was planning to come and then when the day approached, I had to send another email to confirm that they were ready for him that day. The main administrator said I should get a confirmation from the coordinator as well. Now, at this moment I'm going to send another email to the coordinator to confirm the time and that they are ready for him as his first day is supposed to be tomorrow and I haven't received a call or email from the coordinator! I don't even know what time to drop him off!!! Not a great start and I'm not expecting things to go well tomorrow. Fingers crossed since there is nowhere else I can take him on the weekends so we can get a break here in Richmond, VA!

8 months agoAll the bad reviews are true iam disgusted and truly disappointed by the management at camp baker they treat the clients very well and the staff like dirt ,when applying they sugar coat everything and mislead you tell you your perfect for this job they’ll try and sway you with promises of bonus's and good food which both you don’t receive , they charge the same amount for clients to come for a week that they pay you in 3 months (if you sweeten up to those higher up) my belongings and others belongings got stolen while working here with no sort of help from supervisors I want to warn every young person especially young women to not work here as they will not tell you what you really have to do on a day to day basis in the interview .they will not appreciate the hard work ,care , kindness and patience you put in as you are judged by someone who walks around for 30 seconds every few hours and if your brave enough to stand up for yourself you’ll get treated like a criminal they’ll only make a real effort in the first two weeks to convince you to stay and if there are important people walking around on campus suddenly the music is turned up and the clients are dancing they aim to get individuals with disabilities into work however when …. Was working with us they were made fun off behind there back by the managers in charge I truly advise anyone applying through camp America/camp leaders to rethink there decision to come here

3 months agoWAAAAAIT… I will only say that Camp Baker is my second home or my safe place in the USA 🇺🇸. In 2023 I had the opportunity to be a Cabin Leader (Counselor) it is a very rewarding job because every week you meet new people. For me 2023 was the best summer of my life, however in 2024 I returned and seeing all the campers again and the Staff was wonderful, see you this 2025 at Camp Baker
