St. Louis Cathedral, located in the heart of the French Quarter overlooking Jackson Square, is a truly beautiful and historically significant landmark. As the oldest continuously active Catholic cathedral in the United States, it holds a special place in the history of New Orleans. Beyond its stunning architecture and rich history, I found the staff inside to be exceptionally welcoming. I even noticed a staff member walking around and proactively offering to answer any questions visitors might have, which was a really nice touch and made the experience even more engaging. The cathedral, with its three iconic steeples, has been a fixture of the New Orleans skyline since its dedication in 1794. It stands on the site of the first church in the area, established in 1718. The current building is actually the third church on this location, with the previous ones being destroyed by a hurricane and a fire. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply seeking a moment of peace, St. Louis Cathedral is a must-visit. The welcoming atmosphere and knowledgeable staff truly enhance the experience of exploring this beautiful and historic cathedral.

I had always seen exterior photos when I would search the area and look for things to do. As part of a walking tour, I noticed that there were people coming in and out and realize that they accept visitors and online liquors so I stopped in. I am so glad that I did. I did a walk-through during the time Where there was not a service so there were multiple people inside taking in the atmosphere and taking pictures. Every detail of this place is so touching and stunning. I recommend taking some time and walking around, even if you just passed by, take a look at the altar and all of the incredibly detailed stained glass.

A Timeless Stroll Through History and Beauty: Visiting St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square is like stepping into a painting where history, art, and spirituality blend seamlessly. The moment we set foot in the square, we were enveloped by the charm of New Orleans—a city that breathes life through its music, architecture, and deep-rooted traditions. The St. Louis Cathedral, with its striking white façade and towering spires, stands as a beacon of history and faith. Walking inside, we were met with a sense of reverence—sunlight filtered through the stained glass, casting a soft glow over the intricate details of the altar and murals. The hush of visitors, the echoes of centuries-old prayers, and the sheer beauty of its craftsmanship create an atmosphere that is both humbling and awe-inspiring. Outside, Jackson Square is a celebration of life. Street musicians fill the air with the soulful sounds of jazz, artists paint with effortless strokes, and horse-drawn carriages offer a nostalgic journey through time. The square, framed by historic buildings and shaded by old oaks, feels like the heart of New Orleans—vibrant, welcoming, and brimming with stories. Sitting on a bench, watching the cathedral stand tall against the blue sky, we couldn't help but feel a deep appreciation for this place. It’s more than a landmark—it’s a living testament to resilience, culture, and the timeless spirit of New Orleans. If there is one place that captures the soul of the city, it is here, where history whispers through the breeze and music dances in the streets. We loved our visit...

Visited this historic location in April 2025. I enjoyed sitting and praying briefly. There is no admission. You can make a donation and light a candle should you desire to do so.

Visiting this cathedral felt special, knowing it’s the first cathedral in the United States. I love experiencing different religious spaces from various backgrounds and cultures, and this one holds so much history. It’s right in the heart of Jackson Square, which is a must-see in New Orleans, and has the smallest, cutest gift shop. Inside, there are areas where you can make offerings and say prayers, and even when there wasn’t a service, beautiful music played throughout the space, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit, whether for the history, the architecture, or just a quiet moment in the middle of the city.
