Expert Summary

Detailed Insights

Virginia Rush Soccer Club offers various levels of soccer, from developmental and recreational to advanced and competitive, fostering skill growth and a sense of community for some families. However, it faces serious criticism regarding alleged financial misconduct, poor coaching practices that can severely impact a child's confidence and emotional well-being, and administrative mismanagement coupled with a notable lack of communication.

Key Highlights

  • The developmental academy level (for children aged 5-8 years) is praised for having "incredible coaches" like Isaac, Rasheed, and Chris, providing "care, attention to detail, and fun atmosphere" that supports learning and growth (Review 1).
  • The School of Excellence program and travel program have shown positive results, with children experiencing "incredible growth with their soccer IQ and skills" (Review 4).
  • Some coaches are noted for making children "feel special by knowing their names and engaging in conversation with them" (Review 4).
  • The club is described as an "affordable sports option," with recreational soccer including a shirt (Review 2).
  • For some families, the club fosters a strong sense of "community" and "family" (Review 1, 4).

Standout Features

  • Structured "developmental academy level" with caring coaches for younger players (5-8 years) (Review 1).
  • Opportunities for advanced skill development through "School of Excellence program" and "travel program" (Review 4).
  • Offers an "affordable sports option" for recreational play (Review 2).
  • Rec soccer registration includes a team shirt (Review 2).
  • Potential for a strong "community" and "family" atmosphere for some participants (Review 1, 4).

Perfect For

Specifically mentioned for children "5-8 years old" in the developmental academy (Review 1).
Serves a broad range of "children" from recreational to advanced and competitive levels, suggesting elementary through teen years (Review 3).
Includes programs like "School of Excellence" and "travel program" suitable for older children or early teens (Review 4).

Ideal For

Families seeking an "affordable sports option" for recreational soccer (Review 2).
Children aged "5-8 years old" who thrive in a structured "developmental academy" with positively reviewed coaches (Review 1).
Kids aspiring to advanced play in the "School of Excellence" or "travel program," provided they find a supportive coaching environment (Review 4).
Families who prioritize a "community" or "family" feel and are fortunate to have positive coach assignments (Review 1, 4).

💡Pro Tips from Reviews

  • Thoroughly research the specific coach assigned to your child's team, especially if your child is sensitive to criticism, as coaching quality varies drastically and can negatively impact confidence (Review 3).
  • For military families or those who might need to relocate or withdraw due to unforeseen circumstances, obtain explicit, written refund policies and military clauses *before* enrollment and payment. Be prepared for potential disputes and lack of communication regarding refunds (Review 5).
  • Document all communications and financial transactions with the club, particularly concerning tuition, fees, and refund requests (Review 5).

Things to Consider

  • Parents report "horrible coaching and mismanagement" across all levels: recreation, School of Excellence (SOE), advanced, and competitive (Review 3).
  • Specific coaches have severely damaged children's confidence by telling them they are "the least skilled player on the team," "will never start," and "will never be in goal again the rest of the season" (Review 3).
  • There appears to be a "huge emphasis on body image," with coaches allegedly making derogatory comments about a child's body determining their effort or ability, despite hard work (Review 3).
  • Coaches are criticized for a lack of training in "communication, management and people skills," particularly when dealing with children (Review 3).
  • Internal "conflicts between coaches, parents, and administrators" are reportedly ignored or not dealt with effectively, driving away good people (Review 3).
  • The organization is accused of "swindl[ing] a season of player tuition and fees ($600+)" from most players after services were not rendered due to an epidemic shutdown (Review 5).
  • A military family claims the club refused to honor a "standard military clause" for relocation, resulting in the loss of their prepaid tuition and fees (Review 5).
  • There's a significant lack of communication from leadership; the Director of Coaching, Matt Middlestadt, is cited for refusing to communicate about refunds for months (Review 5).

Price & Value

Considered an "affordable sports option" for recreational play, with the benefit of a included shirt (Review 2). However, there is a significant financial risk: families have reported being "swindled" out of "$600+" in tuition and fees for services not rendered due to shutdowns, and the club allegedly failed to honor military clauses for refunds during relocation (Review 5). This indicates high financial vulnerability for families under specific circumstances.

  • If you expect consistent, high-quality coaching across all levels and effective resolution of conflicts or management issues (Review 3).
  • If transparent communication and fair financial practices, especially regarding refunds for military relocation or unforeseen closures, are non-negotiable for your family (Review 5).
  • Military families or those with unstable living situations, as the club has been accused of not honoring standard military clauses for relocation and withholding refunds (Review 5).

I can’t say enough about how great this program is! Our son has been with Rush for 3 years (5-8 years old) and majority of that has been spent in the developmental academy level learning and growing with incredible coaches like Isaac, Rasheed, Chris, and many others. The care, attention to detail, and fun atmosphere has really brought the best out of my son. We’re sad to PCS from this great community and club but are hopeful to come back and rejoin the club. Highly recommend this club; you will not be disappointed!

We've been a Rush family for many years, many seasons. Coaches are all volunteer parents and fairly reasonable. Not sure why any negative reviewers didn't step up and help instead of speaking poorly of an established affordable sports option or complaining about a hardworking parent who volunteered their time off to coach a team. We love Rush soccer. Rec soccer even comes with a shirt.

We have been with Rush for about 7 years. Both our kids have played in the areas of recreation, SOE, advanced and competitive. We are finally leaving because we just can’t take the horrible coaching and mismanagement anymore. Our child’s confidence has plummeted and it’s not hard to see why when a coach tells them they are “the least skilled player on the team” and “will never start” and “will never be in goal again the rest of the season.” When it’s clear that none of this is true and backed up, just the coach didn’t like them. There seems to be a huge emphasis on body image and only those who fit a certain mold get to be on better teams despite ability. Especially when a coach tells them they can see they haven’t been putting in an effort despite their hard work outside practices, just because their body is different. Size does not determine worth or ability. We have only had two good coaches for one of our kids and both those coaches left Rush, because they are good coaches and obviously care more about their players than the clubs bottom line. The Rush coaches need training in communication, management and people skills, especially cause they are dealing with children. Conflicts between coaches, parents, and administrators drive good people away from the club because they are not dealt with in an effective way or they are ignored. Rush is a joke. They want your money but will be quick to destroy your child’s confidence and love for the sport but not care because some other suckers are waiting in the wind and just want that competitive title. I’m just happy my child still wants to play despite the terrible years with Rush.

We have had a wonderful experience with Rush, it truly feels like family. We have had 2 daughters in their School of Excellence program and one of them is now in their travel program. The coaches truly work together to provide the best experience and they make both my girls feel special by knowing their names and engaging in conversation with them. I have seen incredible growth with their soccer IQ and skills and they feel like a valued member of the club.

We really never thought we’d be here with this organization, but despite the negativity we heard rumors of behind the scenes for four years we put our best foot forward because we saw the happiness and growth of our child. And we thought “well, we can do our best to keep a positive attitude through difficultly and we can deal with what comes at us because we believe in common decency amongst people, especially professional worldwide organizations”. Sadly despite it all we became another story to add to this clubs record. Bottom line up front: this organization down right swindled a season of player tuition and fees ($600+) from most of it’s players this year after no services were rendered due to the epidemic shutdown, and has thus far done it to us as a military family who had to relocate halfway around the world despite being told they would honor the standard military clause that most businesses extend, knowing you don’t get to choose when and where you live in the service. THE WORST PART is how they have gone about doing it. They have literally insulted us(and as we saw most of the families who support them) with a refusal to even communicate with us. Six months ago Matt Middlestadt, DIr of Coaching, told us he would be refunding us. Weeks and months went by and no refund and no communication about why. My husband tried calling and emailing and to this day Matt still has never once engaged him. My husband even cc’ed Rush head office distro and literally the only response I received was : “I will check on it. -Matt” We spent days and months devoted to this community. We played year round and even served as their teams accountants and secretary to make sure coaches and players were taken care of so we could build a quality program with them and yet we haven’t been good enough to even be spoken to, written to, repaid, or respected. Take your business else where because Rush doesn’t care, it’s simply a business no a professional program.
